CoinShares Launches Bitcoin Mining UCITS ETF on Deutsche Börse Xetra

Highlights:

  • CoinShares launched a UCITS platform to expand access to regulated digital asset funds across Europe.
  • Its first product, a Bitcoin mining ETF, began trading on Deutsche Börse Xetra on July 21.
  • The platform targets institutions unable to hold debt-based crypto ETPs under existing investment rules and mandates.

CoinShares has launched a new UCITS investment platform to reach a wider group of regulated investors across Europe. The digital asset manager announced the move on July 21, in a company release published by GlobeNewswire. Its first product under the platform is the CoinShares Bitcoin Mining UCITS ETF, which began trading on Deutsche Börse Xetra the same day.

The new platform gives CoinShares access to Europe’s UCITS fund market, which held €26.3 trillion in net assets as of April, according to figures cited from the European Fund and Asset Management Association. UCITS is a widely recognized European framework for regulated investment funds. Many pension funds, insurers, private banks and other large investors are allowed to hold UCITS-compliant products under their investment rules.

CoinShares Targets More European Institutional Investors

CoinShares already offers crypto exchange-traded products, commonly known as ETPs. However, some institutional investors cannot buy debt-based securities, even when those products are fully backed by digital assets. That restriction has prevented some existing CoinShares clients from investing through the company’s traditional ETP structure.

The UCITS platform provides a different fund structure that may fit those investment mandates. CoinShares said the main barrier for many institutions was the type of investment product rather than a lack of interest or an existing business relationship.

As a result, the company can now offer regulated investment funds to institutions that may not be permitted to hold its debt-based crypto ETPs. The new platform will operate alongside CoinShares’ existing ETP business and its wider asset management services.

Bitcoin Mining ETF Becomes First UCITS Product

The CoinShares Bitcoin Mining UCITS ETF is the first fund launched through the new structure. The fund officially launched on July 16 before beginning trading on Deutsche Börse Xetra on July 21.

According to CoinShares’ official product page, the ETF trades under the ticker MINE and has a total expense ratio of 0.65%. The Irish-domiciled, physically replicated fund tracks the CoinShares Bitcoin Mining Index and invests in publicly listed Bitcoin mining companies rather than Bitcoin itself. It uses an accumulating USD share class, rebalances quarterly and does not participate in securities lending.

The product marks CoinShares’ first entry into the regulated UCITS fund market. CoinShares said the platform has received authorization from the Central Bank of Ireland. The company has also completed the main regulatory and operational work required to support the structure and future fund launches.

More Digital Asset Funds Could Follow

CoinShares plans to use the UCITS platform to introduce additional digital asset and thematic investment strategies over time. The company believes the structure can create another source of recurring management fees while reducing its dependence on a single product category. CoinShares co-founder and CEO Jean-Marie Mognetti said the development was “not simply the launch of another investment product.” He described it as the company’s entry into the UCITS market through a platform designed to support future regulated funds.

The launch expands CoinShares’ European product range at a time when regulated investment structures remain central to institutional investment mandates. Rather than changing its digital asset expertise, CoinShares is offering it through a format already accepted by many major European investors.
