North Korea has denied US allegations that its hackers stole $6.3 billion from cryptocurrency exchange Binance. Kim Yo Jong, sister of leader Kim Jong Un, rejected the FBI’s findings and accused Washington of using the incident to damage her country’s reputation. The FBI continues to blame a North Korean-linked hacking operation called TraderTraitor.
In a November 2 statement published by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on November 3, Kim challenged the US government’s claims. Her response came days after the FBI attributed the October 29 attack to North Korean hackers.

North Korea Rejects FBI Allegations Over Binance Hack
Kim dismissed the FBI’s accusation as “an absurd rhetoric and nothing new.” She called it a political provocation and argued that Washington repeatedly blames North Korea whenever major cybercrime cases emerge. She also pointed to the 2025 hack of cryptocurrency exchange Bybit, which US investigators previously linked to North Korean actors. Kim accused Washington of trying to portray North Korea as responsible for cyberattacks around the world.
Kim said North Korea opposes cybercrime and accused the US of using hacking claims against her country for political reasons. She also questioned what Washington would do with the recovered cryptocurrency, as the US plans to hold seized digital assets in a strategic reserve. Kim warned that North Korea could change its approach if the US continued its hostile stance. However, she did not say what action her country might take.
FBI Blames TraderTraitor for $6 Billion Crypto Theft
The FBI announced in an official statement on October 31 that North Koreans had withdrawn over $6 billion worth of digital assets from Binance on or around October 29. The bureau identified the operation as TraderTraitor. The FBI says agents from the bureau, the US Secret Service and the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation followed the hackers as they converted their stolen cryptocurrency primarily into Ether (ETH).
The FBI expects further transfers through decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms and instant swap services. These services allow users to exchange cryptocurrencies without relying on traditional centralized exchanges. The FBI also published wallet addresses linked to the suspected attackers. It urged blockchain analytics firms, crypto businesses and other service providers to block transactions connected to those addresses. The agency also asked anyone with relevant information to contact investigators.
US Law Enforcement agencies (FBI, USSS, IRS and more) provided vital help in this incident, including tracking, freezing, etc.
A tweet can’t fully express our gratitude. Many crypto bros may not realize, a lot of the "why bitcoin didn't drop more?" credit goes to them. 🙏 https://t.co/5dpQKGNQI7

Despite North Korea’s denial, the FBI has not withdrawn its attribution to TraderTraitor. Investigators have yet to release a complete account of how the attackers breached Binance’s systems.
Binance Continues Restoring Withdrawals After Hack
Binance previously said hackers compromised its hot wallets, which store cryptocurrency connected to the internet for everyday transactions. The exchange calculated losses at about $6.3 billion, and said it would be covered using company money. In a recovery update on November 2, Binance announced that it had replaced about 95% of its compromised assets. It also published new proof-of-reserves data that enabled users to confirm the backing of dominant cryptocurrencies.
Meanwhile, Binance announced another phase of withdrawal restoration starting November 3. The exchange said it would reopen services gradually after completing security checks. After investigating, Binance has pledged to release a comprehensive report. Authorities continue tracking the stolen funds and working to identify those responsible for the attack.
