Highlights:
- Bitcoin positioning is turning positive again as sidelined traders return, according to Pantera Capital’s Cosmo Jiang.
- Jiang says the latest rally gained strength after Bitcoin moved above the important $69,000 technical level.
- He sees resistance near $82,000 and believes any short pullback could attract fresh buying.
Bitcoin investor positioning is starting to shift after months of weak market sentiment, according to Pantera Capital general partner and portfolio manager Cosmo Jiang. He said traders who had stayed on the sidelines or held short positions are beginning to move back toward Bitcoin as its technical picture improves.
Jiang discussed the Bitcoin market during an August 21 interview with CNBC. He said the latest rally came after a long period of sideways trading. Bitcoin had stayed in a range for about ten months and was still nearly 50% below its previous highs. According to Jiang, such a long period of price compression can build pressure before a stronger market move develops. As momentum returns, investors who previously avoided the market may start rebuilding their positions.

Bitcoin Positioning Starts to Reverse
Jiang said the change in investor positioning is becoming clearer as Bitcoin recovers. “Positioning is starting to reverse,” he noted. He added that investors are moving from the sidelines and even net short positions toward wanting long exposure to Bitcoin. T
he technical picture has also improved. Jiang said Bitcoin had remained around the $60,000 range for some time before the rally accelerated once BTC broke above roughly $69,000, which he identified as the 200-day moving average.
The 200-day moving average tracks Bitcoin’s average price over the previous 200 days. Traders often watch the level to judge whether the longer-term market trend is strengthening or weakening. Jiang said crossing such an important technical level can attract momentum and technical funds into the market.
Jiang Identifies $82,000 as Bitcoin Resistance
Looking at the next technical level, Jiang did not give an $82,000 Bitcoin price target. Instead, he identified that area as possible resistance. “We think the next resistance might be somewhere in the 82K range,” Jiang said.
He also warned that Bitcoin could experience a short-term pullback after moving quickly over the past week. However, Jiang expects any such decline to be relatively shallow because investors still waiting on the sidelines could buy the dip.
Beyond technical factors, Jiang said stronger crypto fundamentals are supporting his bullish view. He pointed to adoption across stablecoins, prediction markets and perpetual futures, as well as the growing connection between blockchain technology and artificial intelligence.
For Pantera Capital’s longer-term strategy, Jiang said the firm mainly approaches digital assets as a long-term investor. He argued that improving fundamentals alongside prices that remain well below previous highs make it difficult for him to take a bearish view.
Pantera Capital BTC Outlook Comes as BTC Extends Recent Rally
The Pantera Capital Bitcoin comments come during a strong recovery in the cryptocurrency market. CoinMarketCap historical data shows Bitcoin at about $64,681 on August 18 and $77,658 on August 21, representing a rise of roughly 20% over that period.
Bitcoin has continued trading near those higher levels. At the time of writing on August 22, BTC was priced at approximately $78,398, up about 4.68% over the previous 24 hours, according to CoinMarketCap data. Investors are now watching whether the recovery can continue as Bitcoin approaches the $82,000 resistance area identified by Jiang.
Bitcoin’s on-chain data is also improving. As Crypto2Community reported on August 21, Bitcoin’s MVRV has risen, and the CryptoQuant Bull Score moved above 60. Analysts said the two signals could show that the market is starting to recover.
