Highlights:
- HSBC plans to launch RedCoin, a Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, for customer payments later in 2026.
- RedCoin will first support person-to-person transfers and merchant payments through PayMe and HSBC’s Hong Kong banking app.
- HSBC says RedCoin is not yet circulating and will expand later to corporate and institutional uses.
The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) has named its upcoming Hong Kong dollar stablecoin HSBC RedCoin as the bank prepares to bring the digital currency to customers later this year. The bank announced the name on September 30 and said the first phase will focus on person-to-person transfers and payments to merchants in Hong Kong.
According to HSBC’s official announcement, RedCoin has not yet been issued. The bank plans to launch the Hong Kong dollar-denominated stablecoin in the second half of 2026 under a licence granted in April. At launch, customers will only be able to access it through PayMe and the HSBC HK Mobile Banking App.
A stablecoin is a digital asset designed to maintain its value against another asset, usually a traditional currency. HSBC previously said its Hong Kong dollar stablecoin would be fully backed by high-quality liquid assets kept in segregated accounts.

HSBC RedCoin Will Start With Everyday Payments
The firm plans to introduce RedCoin gradually rather than launching several services at once. The first use cases will include person-to-person (P2P) payments and person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions. That will allow customers to use the stablecoin for activities such as transferring value to friends and family or paying participating merchants. HSBC said it intends to expand RedCoin later to wholesale, corporate and institutional uses as Hong Kong’s digital asset market develops.
The bank had already outlined part of this strategy when it received its stablecoin issuer licence in April. At the time, HSBC said it would integrate its stablecoin with PayMe and the HSBC Hong Kong app. It also listed tokenized investment subscriptions among the services planned for its digital asset ecosystem.
Maggie Ng, CEO Hong Kong and Head of Retail Banking and Wealth, Hong Kong at HSBC, said the RedCoin name reflects the bank’s heritage. “Launching our coin is just the beginning. Our goal is to support Hong Kong’s financial innovation,” Ng said.
HSBC Survey Shows Interest in Stablecoin Payments
Alongside the RedCoin announcement, HSBC released findings from a survey of 1,060 customers in Hong Kong conducted between June 18 and June 28. The results showed that 74% of respondents recognized at least one stablecoin use case. Digital asset trading and tokenized investments ranked highest at 57%, followed by person-to-person transfers at 53%. Cross-border remittances and merchant payments were each recognized by 52% of respondents.
However, HSBC also found gaps in public understanding. While 60% correctly identified a stablecoin as a fiat-backed digital asset, 26% believed governments issued stablecoins. Another 10% thought they provided interest, which is not part of Hong Kong’s current stablecoin regulatory framework.
Security and regulation also matter to potential users. About 53% of surveyed customers pointed to fraud protection as a factor that could increase confidence, while 51% wanted easy conversion to cash. Regulatory clarity ranked even higher at 62%, followed by better education at 55%.
HSBC Plans Stablecoin Education Before Wider Expansion
HSBC will also introduce an educational program for the Hong Kong public through its banking apps, website and social media channels. The program will focus on scam prevention and how stablecoin redemption works.
HSBC has warned customers that HSBC RedCoin is not yet in circulation. The bank also said it has no connection with any tokens currently claiming links to HSBC and urged users to stay alert for investment scams. HSBC will share more details about the official launch as the rollout gets closer.
