- Senator Elizabeth Warren could lead the Senate Banking Committee after Democrats gained control in the midterm elections.

- Warren has opposed crypto legislation over investor protection concerns and questioned Trump-linked cryptocurrency businesses over potential conflicts.
US Senator Elizabeth Warren is expected to take charge of the Senate Banking Committee after Democrats won control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections. The change could bring tougher oversight of cryptocurrency companies, Wall Street banks and prediction markets. Warren, a longtime critic of weak financial protections, would gain more power to question executives and investigate industry practices.
In a November 6 report, The Wall Street Journal said Elizabeth Warren could use the chairmanship to examine crypto consumer protections, private equity, major banks and potential conflicts tied to President Donald Trump. The Massachusetts Democrat currently serves as the committee’s top Democrat. Her appointment as chair has not yet been finalized.

Warren’s New Role Could Bring More Crypto Investigations
As chair, Warren would have greater control over hearings, investigations and legislative priorities. She could also use subpoena powers to seek records and testimony. Democrats are set to take over Senate committees in January 2027, giving Warren a stronger position than she held under Republican control.
Her plans extend beyond digital assets. The WSJ said Warren is likely to press her Stop Wall Street Looting Act, which targets private-equity practices. She may also investigate suspected insider trading on prediction markets and question major lenders, including JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America. However, increased scrutiny does not automatically lead to new laws.
According to Reuters on November 5, banks have begun preparing for more congressional inquiries. Executives expect Democrats to examine consumer fees, lending practices and whether reduced oversight has harmed customers. Financial firms could also face fresh requests for records and testimony.
Elizabeth Warren Has Already Challenged US Crypto Legislation
Warren’s criticism of proposed crypto rules is well established. During a May 14 Senate Banking Committee meeting, she opposed the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, arguing that it lacked sufficient safeguards for investors and national security. The committee nevertheless advanced the bill by a 15-9 vote.
She has also questioned the Trump family’s cryptocurrency business. On May 14, Warren urged the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to investigate whether World Liberty Financial misled investors over a $75 million token-backed borrowing arrangement. Her request raised concerns but did not establish wrongdoing.
Last July, Warren outlined five priorities for US crypto regulation. They included investor protection, financial stability, anti-money-laundering safeguards, enforcement of securities laws and restrictions on public officials profiting from digital assets. Her position could complicate negotiations over future crypto market-structure legislation.
Prediction Markets and Bipartisan Talks Also in Focus
Warren has recently turned her attention to event-betting platforms. On October 29, she and Republican Senator John Curtis asked Kalshi and Polymarket to explain how they prevent insider trading and manipulation in election-related contracts. Their joint inquiry showed that some oversight concerns cross party lines.
However, Warren has said she is interested in cooperating with Republicans on financial policies, despite her tough rhetoric. Bank access and deposit insurance, housing, and credit-card fees could be potential avenues for cooperation, according to the WSJ. For the companies behind cryptocurrencies, the short-term effect would be probably more congressional investigation than a new set of regulations.
