Strategy Buys No Bitcoin, Uses $139M to Repurchase STRC

Highlights:

  • Strategy skipped Bitcoin purchases last week and instead spent $139.3 million repurchasing STRC preferred stock.
  • Its Bitcoin holdings stayed at 845,050 BTC, with no buying, selling, or ATM share issuance.
  • After the STRC buyback, Strategy still held $1.30 billion in USD Cash and $5.10 billion in reserves.

Bitcoin treasury company Strategy did not buy any Bitcoin last week. Instead, the company used $139.3 million to repurchase STRC preferred stock, according to its latest regulatory filing. Strategy disclosed the update in a Form 8-K dated September 14. The filing covers activity from September 8 through September 13. During that period, the company did not buy or sell Bitcoin. It also did not sell shares through its at-the-market offering program.

As a result, Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings remained at 845,050 BTC as of September 13. The company acquired those holdings for a total cost of about $63.73 billion. Its average purchase price stands at around $75,412 per Bitcoin, including fees and other expenses.

Strategy Repurchases $139.3M of STRC Stock

While Strategy paused its Bitcoin buying, it used cash to repurchase its Variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock, which trades under the ticker STRC. The company bought back 1,420,467 STRC shares between September 8 and September 13. The total purchase price reached $139.3 million.

Strategy did not repurchase any STRF, STRK or STRD preferred shares during the same period. It also bought back no MSTR common stock. After the STRC purchase, Strategy still had $1.05 billion available under its preferred stock repurchase program. Another $1 billion remains available under its separate MSTR stock repurchase program. STRC is one of several preferred securities Strategy has issued. These securities are part of the company’s broader capital strategy alongside its common stock, debt, and Bitcoin holdings.

Strategy funded the STRC repurchase from its USD Cash balance. The company separates its dollar holdings into USD Cash and a USD Reserve. Strategy can use USD Cash for several purposes. These include buying Bitcoin, adding money to the USD Reserve and managing other capital needs.

The USD Reserve has a more specific purpose. Strategy uses it to support preferred stock dividends and interest payments on its outstanding debt. After spending $139.3 million on STRC, Strategy reported $1.30 billion in USD Cash as of September 13. Its USD Reserve stood at $5.10 billion.

Strategy Bitcoin Holdings Stay at 845,050 BTC

The latest filing marks a week without a new Strategy Bitcoin purchase. The company added neither BTC nor reduced its position. Its Bitcoin treasury therefore remains at about 845,050 BTC, while the latest capital activity focused on STRC shares instead. Strategy has built its corporate strategy around Bitcoin, but its filing shows it can also use available cash for stock repurchases and other capital needs.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin trades at around $78,035, down 1.17% over the past 24 hours and about 38% below its $126,198 all-time high. Meanwhile, Bitcoin trading activity is also picking up. CryptoQuant reported on September 14 that exchange trading volume has climbed sharply, showing stronger participation across the market.
