Highlights:
- The upcoming HBO documentary Money Electric is set to reveal the true identity of Bitcoin’s anonymous creator.
- Current estimates suggest Nakamoto controls around 1.1 million BTC, valued at $66 billion.
- Revealing Nakamoto’s identity could raise legal questions and impact Bitcoin’s future in politics.
According to an October 3 Politico article, a new HBO documentary set to air next week claims to have revealed the real identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous founder of Bitcoin (BTC). The identity of Nakamoto has been a contentious issue in the crypto community for years, with wallets connected to the Bitcoin creator holding nearly 1.1 million BTC tokens.
Nakamoto vanished in December 2010. Uncovering Nakamoto’s identity in the documentary could raise significant legal and ethical questions. Current estimates value Nakamoto’s holdings at about $66 billion.

Documentary Explores Bitcoin’s Origins and Creator Identity
The documentary “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery” premieres next Wednesday, Oct. 9. It is directed by Cullen Hoback, known for “Q: Into the Storm,” which exposed the figures behind the QAnon conspiracy theory. HBO released a trailer for the documentary on Oct. 3. It features interviews and research with early Bitcoin adopters, including Blockstream founder Adam Back and JAN3 CEO Samson Mow.
Hoback said:
“A few of you might have wondered why I disappeared. Well, I was tracking down someone else who disappeared. Curious who’s behind Bitcoin? MoneyElectric: The Bitcoin Mystery drops next Tuesday. It’s going to be a rollercoaster.”
While it appears that Hoback and HBO imply a revelation will occur, neither the film’s official trailer nor Hoback’s statements explicitly confirm the identification of an individual. Both Hoback’s post on X and the trailer suggest that Nakamoto might be an individual, a group of people, or someone else whom previous investigations overlooked.

Key Figures Speculated as Satoshi Nakamoto
The primary individuals being discussed in relation to the documentary are Len Sassaman, Hal Finney, and Adam Back. The community has previously speculated that any of them could be Satoshi Nakamoto.
The trailer features Back, one of the Cypherpunk developers HBO interviewed for their investigation. The Cypherpunks were a group of libertarian technologists and hackers focused on promoting internet freedom and privacy.
Back has consistently rejected these claims, asserting that he is not the original creator of Bitcoin. Sassaman and Finney, on the other hand, passed away over a decade ago, and no solid evidence links either of them to Satoshi, despite their early contributions to Bitcoin.
HBO documentary claims that "Adam Back" is Satoshi?
definitely something to see and eventually debunk.

Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy Digital, shared his thoughts on the speculation. Thorn stated that this scenario would be neutral to positive for Bitcoin. If Satoshi is deceased, the 1.1 million BTC tokens would likely be permanently lost. This situation would also eliminate the risk of Bitcoin’s creator attempting to regain influence over the protocol in the future.
hearing that the forthcoming HBO (wed oct 9) documentary identifies len sassaman as satoshi — there was a good write-up of this theory by @evan_worlds in 2021
if that's who the doc identifies, should be neutral to positive for BTCUSD given that len died in 2013 (RIP)…

Throughout the years, several individuals have asserted that they are Satoshi Nakamoto, with Australian cryptographer Craig Steven Wright being the most prominent among them. However, he fails to provide definitive proof of his identity.
The Bitcoin community debates whether to disclose Nakamoto’s identity. Many argue that his anonymity is vital to Bitcoin’s ethos, claiming that any effort to unmask him is speculative without cryptographic proof from a verified Satoshi wallet.
Revealing Nakamoto’s identity could have significant consequences, potentially affecting the U.S. presidential election. Former President Donald Trump has garnered support from Bitcoin advocates. The documentary’s release timing may spark speculation about how Bitcoin’s future will connect with political and regulatory developments.
