Justin Sun Accuses World Liberty of Adding Backdoor Functions to USD1

Highlights:

  • USD1 has functions that can move funds from frozen wallets without user approval.
  • Justin Sun says World Liberty’s public code does not show all the controls running on USD1.
  • Cold wallets and multisig wallets cannot block USD1 controls that operate at the contract level.

Tron founder Justin Sun has accused World Liberty Financial of adding USD1 “backdoor functions” that can move funds from frozen wallets. Sun made the allegation on Aug. 21 after examining administrative powers within the live USD1 contract.

Justin Sun Accuses World Liberty's USD1 of Having "Backdoor Functions"

Sun claims privileged operators can move USD1 from frozen addresses without receiving approval from affected holders. He says the authority works through the token contract rather than through a user’s wallet. Therefore, neither cold storage nor multisignature custody can stop authorized contract actions after administrators freeze an address.

The live USD1 contract contains drain and reallocate functions that authorized operators can use against frozen balances. The drain function can transfer a frozen address’s entire USD1 balance to the contract owner. Meanwhile, reallocate can move a specified amount from a frozen address to another wallet.

Neither function requires the affected holder’s approval when an authorized administrator uses it against a frozen address. However, the functions target frozen accounts and do not give administrators unrestricted access to every USD1 wallet.

Justin Sun Questions World Liberty Over Code Differences

Justin Sun claims World Liberty’s public USD1 repository omits administrative functions that appear in the live StablecoinV2 implementation. USD1 moved to that implementation through an upgradeable proxy on April 5. World Liberty’s published USD1 repository includes functions for minting, burning, freezing, and pausing tokens. However, the repository does not show the drain, reallocate, or V2 initializer functions present in the deployed implementation.

The deployed USD1 contract remains publicly visible through blockchain explorers, where developers can inspect its administrative functions directly. However, developers relying only on World Liberty’s GitHub repository may miss controls operating in the deployed contract. Sun compared the repository mismatch with techniques used in rug pulls and accused World Liberty of deceptive contract deployment. However, available evidence does not establish that World Liberty deliberately left its repository outdated to deceive users or auditors.

Sun also questioned whether World Liberty holds enough separate company capital to cover potential judgments from their legal dispute. He argues that assets backing USD1’s roughly $4 billion supply belong to stablecoin holders rather than World Liberty. Meanwhile, USD1’s circulating supply has fallen by more than $1.3 billion from its February peak above $5.3 billion. However, the decline began before Sun’s latest allegations and does not show that holders redeemed USD1 because of his claims.

Court Fight Puts USD1 Claims in Focus

Justin Sun raised his USD1 allegations one day after claiming a procedural victory against World Liberty in California federal court. Sun said Judge James Donato decided on Aug. 20 that his personal claims would remain in public federal court.

According to Sun, both sides must still determine which claims involving his companies should remain in court or enter arbitration. World Liberty CEO Zach Witkoff called Sun’s account “riddled with falsehoods” and said the court had made no ruling. Witkoff argues that some claims involving Sun’s companies belong in arbitration. World Liberty also seeks dismissal of Sun’s personal claims.

Sun committed $45 million to WLFI before his relationship with World Liberty later deteriorated. World Liberty restricted his token access and accused him of improperly moving assets and participating in activity intended to pressure WLFI’s price. Sun raised his backdoor allegations seven days after the OCC conditionally approved World Liberty Trust Company as a proposed national trust bank. The proposed bank plans to take over USD1 issuance, redemption, and reserve management from BitGo.

Today, @worldlibertyfi received conditional approval from the OCC to organize World Liberty Trust Company, N.A., a national trust bank designed from the ground up to issue $USD1 and provide custody under federal supervision.
