Crypto Weekly Market Wrap August 31 – ETF Inflows, Treasury Moves, Banking Adoption and Global Regulation

The crypto market recorded another active week as major developments unfolded across regulation, banking, and institutional adoption. Financial companies expanded their digital asset services, while traditional banks explored new opportunities across the crypto sector.

Meanwhile, regulators advanced new proposals that could reshape digital asset markets in several regions. Crypto investment products also attracted fresh demand as institutions expanded their exposure beyond major assets. Here are the major developments that shaped the last week of this month.

Strategy Creates $1.59B Cash Reserve

Strategy created a $1.59 billion USD Cash pool for future Bitcoin treasury activities, according to an SEC filing. The company may use the funds to buy Bitcoin, pay dividends, or repurchase shares. Strategy funded the pool after selling more than $2 billion in MSTR shares.

However, Strategy bought or sold no Bitcoin during the week. Its holdings remained at 840,447 BTC, acquired for $63.36 billion at an average price of $75,385. Strategy also repurchased 1.4 million STRC shares for more than $136 million. The company has not purchased Bitcoin since June 22, when it added 520 BTC.

Blockchain Association Seeks Changes to Stablecoin Rules

The Blockchain Association backed a US customer identification rules proposal for permitted payment stablecoin issuers during an August 24 regulatory response. The crypto trade group asked US regulators to limit identification checks to customers who interact directly with stablecoin issuers.

1/ On Friday, Blockchain Association filed comments on federal agencies’ proposed customer identification requirements for permitted payment stablecoin issuers under the GENIUS Act.

The Blockchain Association also asked regulators to clearly define which stablecoin users qualify as account holders under the proposed framework. Moreover, the group requested one implementation timeline covering customer identification, anti-money laundering, sanctions, and counter-terrorism requirements.

Grayscale Launches First Zcash Spot ETF

Grayscale launched the first US spot Zcash ETF after converting its existing Zcash Trust into an exchange-traded fund. The ZCSH fund began trading on NYSE Arca, giving investors regulated Zcash exposure through traditional brokerage accounts.

Grayscale structured the product to track Zcash holdings without requiring investors to directly buy or store the cryptocurrency. The ETF launched with about 393,000 ZEC worth roughly $260 million backing the investment product. Grayscale appointed Coinbase Custody Trust Company to safeguard the assets supporting the fund.

US Banking Groups Form BankChain Alliance

Thirty-nine US state banking associations launched the BankChain Alliance to build shared blockchain infrastructure for community banks. The alliance plans to launch its blockchain network this year after completing development and regulatory preparations. The network will help participating banks offer blockchain services without building expensive technology systems independently. BankChain Alliance plans to support tokenized deposits, stablecoins, automated settlements, and round-the-clock payments through the shared network.

Shinhan and Visa Test Stablecoin Payments

Shinhan Financial Group and Visa launched a stablecoin payment pilot to test blockchain-based settlement across South Korea and international markets. The companies will examine how stablecoins can support faster payments while connecting blockchain infrastructure with existing financial systems. Shinhan will provide its banking expertise, while Visa will contribute its global payment network and digital asset capabilities.

The pilot will test stablecoin use across payments, settlements, and cross-border transactions under existing financial requirements. Shinhan and Visa will also examine compliance standards needed to connect stablecoin services with regulated banking infrastructure.

Revolut Launches EURR Stablecoin in Europe

Revolut launched its first euro-backed stablecoin, EURR, for selected customers in Denmark, Poland, and Portugal. Stablecoin infrastructure company Bridge already issues EURR under the MiCA regulatory framework. Revolut integrated the stablecoin into its existing app to give eligible customers direct access to the euro-backed digital asset. Revolut plans to expand EURR across the EEA after completing the initial rollout in the three markets. Customers can exchange euros for EURR at a one-to-one rate through the Revolut platform.

Zerohash Files Second US Bank Charter Application

Zerohash filed a second application to establish Zerohash National Trust Bank after its first proposal failed to advance earlier this year. The new bank would operate from Asheville, North Carolina, if regulators approve the application. Zerohash also plans to place the proposed institution under a holding company structure.

Zerohash submitted its first proposal in March to secure national trust powers for digital asset and fiduciary services. However, regulators returned that application without identifying the specific problems that prevented it from advancing. A returned application differs from a formal rejection because regulators make no decision on its merits. Zerohash subsequently submitted the revised proposal with a new structure for its planned national trust bank.

Charles Schwab Plans to Expand Crypto Offerings

Charles Schwab plans to add Solana, Avalanche, and Chainlink to its crypto trading platform within the coming months. The brokerage disclosed the expansion after launching direct Bitcoin and Ethereum trading through Schwab Crypto earlier in August. Schwab plans to offer the three additional assets through the same platform as it expands direct crypto access for customers. The planned expansion would increase the platform’s direct cryptocurrency offering from two assets to five.

BlackRock Links US Debt to Bitcoin Demand

BlackRock digital assets head Robbie Mitchnick said rising US government debt could strengthen Bitcoin’s long-term appeal among investors. US federal debt has moved above $40 trillion, increasing concerns about fiscal pressure and currency debasement. Mitchnick said those conditions could increase demand for scarce assets that governments cannot create or control.

Mitchnick described Bitcoin as a potential hedge against risks linked to government debt, inflation, and declining confidence in traditional currencies. He said Bitcoin’s fixed supply of 21 million coins supports that role when investors seek protection from monetary expansion. BlackRock expects the characteristics of BTC to support its demand if concerns about US fiscal conditions persist.

Blockstream Proposes Quantum Security Upgrade for Bitcoin

Blockstream researchers proposed SHRINCS to protect Bitcoin against future attacks from quantum computers. The proposal would replace Bitcoin’s current elliptic-curve signatures with a hash-based signature system. Blockstream designed SHRINCS around established cryptographic techniques rather than newer quantum-resistant methods that still require more testing.

Blockstream plans to test SHRINCS on common Bitcoin hardware wallets during 2026 before considering wider implementation. The tests will examine larger signature sizes and extra signing steps on devices with limited memory and processing power. Researchers will use the results to determine whether the proposed signature system can work efficiently with the existing Bitcoin hardware.

Bithumb Wins Bitcoin Credit Court Case

Bithumb won a South Korean court case involving Bitcoin that the exchange mistakenly credited to a customer’s account. The Seoul Central District Court ordered the customer to return about 194 million won to Bithumb. The dispute started after Bithumb accidentally deposited Bitcoin into the account during an internal transfer process.

The customer sold part of the mistakenly credited Bitcoin and withdrew some proceeds before Bithumb discovered the error. Bithumb later demanded repayment after identifying the incorrect credit, but the customer disputed the exchange’s claim. The court ruled that the customer had no legal right to keep the funds generated from Bitcoin that Bithumb transferred by mistake.

BitGo Acquires NYDIG Institutional Trading Business

BitGo acquired NYDIG’s institutional trading business to expand its services for professional crypto investors and financial institutions. The deal adds NYDIG’s trading operations, institutional relationships, and experienced trading team to BitGo’s existing platform. BitGo will gain NYDIG capabilities covering derivatives, structured products, financing, and other institutional trading services through the transaction. NYDIG will retain its other businesses while transferring the institutional trading unit to BitGo.

SEC Proposes New Rules for Public Token Sales

The SEC proposed new exemptions that could allow crypto projects to sell tokens publicly without completing full securities registration. One proposed route would let qualifying projects raise up to $75 million during a 12-month period. Projects using the exemption would still need to provide investors with information about their businesses, tokens, and fundraising plans.

The SEC also proposed a separate pathway for smaller crypto projects seeking limited amounts of capital from investors. That route could allow qualifying issuers to raise up to $5 million over four years under lighter requirements.

Sberbank Expands Plans for Crypto-Backed Loans

Sberbank plans to let corporate customers use Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT as collateral for traditional loans in Russia. Deputy Chairman Anatoly Popov disclosed the plan after the bank tested crypto-backed lending with selected corporate clients. Sberbank already tested the lending model through a Bitcoin-backed corporate loan with Russian mining company Intelion Data. Sberbank plans to use its existing lending infrastructure while treating the pledged cryptocurrencies as security for corporate loans.

Dunamu and Visa Explore Stablecoin Payments

Dunamu and Visa signed an agreement to explore stablecoin payments and digital financial services across global markets. The Upbit operator will combine its blockchain infrastructure with Visa’s international payments network under the partnership. Both companies plan to examine payment models that connect stablecoins with the existing financial systems.

Dunamu and Visa will also explore stablecoin settlement and payment services that could support cross-border transactions. In addition, the companies plan to study how blockchain technology can work alongside Visa’s established payment infrastructure.

BIS Chief Questions Stablecoins for Large Payments

BIS General Manager Pablo Hernández de Cos questioned whether stablecoins can support large-scale payments during remarks made on August 28. He argued that stablecoins lack the credibility and stability required for widespread everyday payment use. He instead backed tokenized commercial bank deposits as a stronger foundation for digital payments within regulated financial systems.

Hernández de Cos also raised concerns about the growing use of dollar-backed stablecoins across international markets. He said wider adoption could increase dependence on the US dollar in economies with weaker domestic currencies.

SEC Proposes EU Debt Futures Exemption

The SEC proposed an exemption that would allow certain EU sovereign debt futures to receive the same treatment as qualifying US government securities. The agency proposed the change under Rule 3a12-8 to expand access to futures tied to eligible European government debt. The exemption would cover contracts involving sovereign debt from qualifying European Union member states.

The proposal would also clarify oversight between the SEC and the CFTC for eligible EU debt futures. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins said the change could give US investors greater access to European sovereign debt markets. The SEC opened the proposal for public comments before deciding whether to adopt the exemption.

Crypto ETF Inflows Spread Beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum

Crypto spot ETFs attracted about $2.07 billion in combined weekly net inflows, according to SoSoValue data. Bitcoin ETFs led with $924 million, while Ethereum products attracted another $824 million. Meanwhile, Solana, XRP, and Hyperliquid ETFs recorded $154 million, $110 million, and $56.86 million, respectively.

— SoSoValue (@SoSoValueCrypto) August 31, 2026

Bitcoin and Ethereum generated about 84.5% of the five categories’ combined inflows, down from 97.3% one week earlier. Meanwhile, SOL, XRP, and HYPE increased their combined share from 2.7% to 15.5%. The total inflows fell about 23% from the previous week’s $2.69 billion.

Bitcoin Price Performance

Bitcoin displayed a strong recovery over the past week after moving away from the $58,075 support zone. The cryptocurrency pushed toward $81,300 before pulling back to around $78,080. However, Bitcoin is still facing strong resistance near $82,945. A break above this level could open the path toward $90,000. After that, Bitcoin could target the $100,000 area.

Meanwhile, $70,000 remains the nearest support if the price drops again. The stronger support sits near $58,075. Bitcoin has already defended this lower zone several times this year. Therefore, another drop toward this area could test the strength of the wider structure. Still, Bitcoin needs to clear $82,945 before the weekly structure turns stronger.
