Dunamu and Visa Partner to Explore Stablecoin Payments and AI Commerce

Highlights:

  • Dunamu and Visa are teaming up to explore stablecoin payments, cross-border transfers, and AI-based financial services.
  • The partnership will study OUSD-based business models while developing services gradually under local regulatory requirements.
  • Both companies will also explore agentic commerce, where AI tools can help users make payments through stablecoin-based systems.

Dunamu, the company behind South Korea’s Upbit crypto exchange, has joined forces with Visa to explore stablecoin payments, cross-border transfers, and AI-driven financial services. The partnership will look at new ways to combine digital currencies with modern payment technology.

According to an August 28 report from Yonhap News Agency, Dunamu announced the strategic partnership after presenting its roadmap with Visa on August 27 in San Francisco. Dunamu CEO Oh Kyung-seok and Visa Global President Oliver Jenkyn were both present at the event.

The partnership will focus on several areas, including stablecoin payments and global remittance services. However, Dunamu and Visa have not yet decided on a specific service or final business structure. Instead, the companies plan to develop their plans gradually while considering local laws and regulatory requirements.

Dunamu and Visa Explore Stablecoin Payment Services

Stablecoins will be one of the main parts of the partnership. Unlike cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, stablecoins are designed to maintain a more stable value, often by tracking a traditional currency such as the U.S. dollar. Dunamu and Visa will look at ways stablecoins could be used for payments and cross-border money transfers. The companies will also study business models based on OUSD, a U.S. dollar stablecoin from Open Standard.

However, the announcement does not confirm that Dunamu or Visa will immediately launch an OUSD-based payment product. The companies are still reviewing possible models and will develop the project in stages. Their work could cover both financial services and payment infrastructure. For now, the focus is on finding practical ways to use stablecoins while meeting regulatory requirements.

AI Payments and Agentic Commerce Join the Partnership

Dunamu and Visa are also looking beyond traditional stablecoin transfers. Their partnership will explore services that combine artificial intelligence with stablecoin payment and settlement infrastructure.

One area under review is agentic commerce. Under this model, AI can help users find products or services and complete the payment on their behalf. The companies plan to examine the technology and infrastructure needed to support this type of AI-driven payment system. That includes looking at how stablecoin settlement could work alongside automated purchasing services.

At this stage, Dunamu and Visa have not announced a launch date for any commercial service. They have also not confirmed the final structure of their stablecoin or AI payment products.

Visa Is Expanding Its Stablecoin Work in South Korea

The Dunamu partnership comes shortly after Visa announced another stablecoin-focused agreement in South Korea. On August 26, Crypto2Community reported that Shinhan Financial Group and Visa will test stablecoin issuance, transfers, redemptions, and payment services. The partnership also covers AI-based payments and business payment services. Shinhan plans to combine services from Shinhan Bank, Shinhan Card, and Jeju Bank with Visa’s payment infrastructure.

Together, the Dunamu and Shinhan partnerships show Visa expanding its work with both crypto and traditional financial companies in South Korea as stablecoin payments and AI-based financial services receive more attention.
