Vitalik Buterin Says Ethereum Is Moving Beyond a Traditional Blockchain

Highlights:

  • Vitalik Buterin says Ethereum is moving beyond simple transactions toward privacy, verification and more flexible computation.
  • Zero-knowledge proofs could let Ethereum verify complex work without forcing every calculation onto the main network.
  • Buterin also sees AI, Layer 2 networks and quantum-safe cryptography playing larger roles in Ethereum’s future.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin says Ethereum is moving beyond the role of a traditional blockchain. He sees the network becoming a wider system for computation, privacy and verification. Ethereum Daily shared the comments on September 24 after Buterin’s appearance at the Shanghai Blockchain International Week. His main focus was on zero-knowledge proofs, privacy, Layer 2 networks, artificial intelligence and quantum-safe security.

Zero-Knowledge Proofs Could Play a Bigger Role

A major part of Buterin’s vision involves zero-knowledge proofs, also known as ZK proofs. These proofs allow a system to complete a calculation and then prove that the result is correct. Ethereum can verify that proof without repeating the full calculation. Today, blockchain networks often require many nodes to process the same activity. Buterin believes ZK technology can reduce this repeated work.

As a result, more computation could happen outside Ethereum’s main Layer 1 network. The final result could then be sent back to Ethereum as a proof for verification. This approach could help Ethereum handle more activity without putting every calculation directly on-chain.

Privacy is also becoming a bigger part of Ethereum’s future. Buterin said blockchain apps should give users more control over who can see their information. Some details could stay private, while Ethereum still checks that the transaction or calculation is valid.

Vitalik: Ethereum is Becoming More Than a Blockchain

Speaking at the 2026 Shanghai Blockchain International Week, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared a broader vision for where Ethereum is heading.

Ethereum Could Become a Verification Layer

Buterin also described a wider system where Ethereum does not need to perform every step itself. Activity could begin on a user’s device. It could then move through private transaction pools, different participants, block builders and Layer 2 networks.

Ethereum would mainly verify the final results. Layer 2 networks already process transactions outside Ethereum’s main chain before sending information back to Layer 1. However, Buterin’s vision expands this idea further. Different systems could handle computation where it is most efficient. Ethereum would then act as a trusted layer for checking the final proof. This could make the network more scalable while keeping Ethereum at the center of verification.

AI and Quantum Security Could Shape the Ethereum Blockchain Roadmap

Artificial intelligence could also support Ethereum development. Buterin believes AI tools can help developers write code, test systems and find problems faster. AI may also help with formal verification, which uses mathematical methods to check whether software works as expected.

Meanwhile, Ethereum developers are also preparing for future risks from quantum computing. Buterin pointed to STARK-based technology as one possible part of Ethereum’s longer-term security plans. STARKs can support scalable proofs and are also considered useful in the move toward quantum-resistant cryptography.

Overall, Buterin’s vision is not only about making Ethereum Layer 1 faster. He sees Ethereum becoming a broader trust and verification layer.

At the time of writing, Ethereum was trading near $2,648, down 2.7% over the past 24 hours. ETH remains about 46.5% below its all-time high of $4,953, according to CoinMarketCap.
