Trump’s campaign has partnered with OpenNode, a leading Bitcoin and Lightning Network infrastructure provider, to facilitate these donations. Supporters can now contribute to Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign using Bitcoin via the Lightning Network, designed to enable fast and low-cost transactions.

Trump Campaign Partners with OpenNode

OpenNode, in collaboration with Anedot, is bringing Bitcoin into the political donation process. “OpenNode is proud to partner with Anedot to bring Bitcoin into the political donation process,” OpenNode told Bitcoin Magazine. “This is a perfect marriage of OpenNode’s leading Bitcoin tech stack and Anedot’s robust platform for political and nonprofit organizations. The Trump campaign’s adoption of our solution is a powerful proof-point of how political campaigns and nonprofits nationwide can seamlessly accept Bitcoin donations.”

During a recent Libertarian Party convention, Trump emphasized his dedication to fostering a Bitcoin-friendly environment in the U.S. He stated, “I will ensure that the future of crypto and Bitcoin will be made in the USA,” and he “will support the right to self-custody for the nation’s 50 million crypto holders.”

Commitment Beyond Donations

Trump’s support for Bitcoin extends beyond campaign donations. During the same speech, he committed to commuting the sentence of Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road and an early Bitcoin pioneer, to time served if elected President. “He’s already served 11 years,” Trump said. “We’re going to get him home.”

Being the first President to accept Bitcoin for campaign donations underscores Trump’s broader strategy to appeal to the country’s over 50 million cryptocurrency enthusiasts and investors. By aligning himself with the Bitcoin community, Trump has positioned himself as a leader who embraces technological advancements and financial freedom.

Kennedy’s Support for Crypto

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s opponent in the U.S. presidential race, expressed his support for Trump’s pro-crypto stance during a press conference at Consensus 2024 in Austin, Texas. Kennedy said,

I’m happy about that. I think it’s a good thing for our country. Commitment to crypto is a commitment to freedom and transparency. I’m not going to question if it was a political decision. I’m happy he did it, and I hope President Biden does, too.

The aspirant highlighted the main issues with crypto regulation in the U.S.: the need for transactional freedom and sovereignty over wallets. He emphasized the importance of having a transparent currency and ensuring that America stays at the forefront of blockchain technology. He also stated his commitment to regulating cryptocurrency in a way that protects consumers from deceptive schemes.

Kennedy also shared his personal involvement with Bitcoin, stating, “I purchased 21 bitcoins since I started this campaign. I also bought three coins for each of my kids.”
