Ripple and Coinbase Expand RLUSD Access Across Three Blockchains

Highlights:

  • Ripple and Coinbase have partnered to expand RLUSD access for retail and institutional customers across Coinbase platforms.
  • Coinbase now supports RLUSD transfers on XRP Ledger, Base, and Ethereum, giving users more blockchain options.
  • Ripple’s RLUSD expansion follows a Robinhood partnership and approval to establish its national trust bank.

Ripple and Coinbase have partnered to make Ripple USD (RLUSD) available to more retail and institutional users in the United States. Customers can now trade and manage the dollar-backed stablecoin through Coinbase’s retail app, Coinbase Exchange and Coinbase Prime. The partnership also supports RLUSD transfers across three blockchain networks.

Ripple announced the agreement in an October 28 press release. The companies said customers can convert US dollars and other supported dollar-backed stablecoins into RLUSD at a 1:1 rate. More services are planned, including RLUSD support on Coinbase Global Exchange and its use as trading collateral.

RLUSD Now Available Through Coinbase Trading Platforms

The launch brings RLUSD to different parts of Coinbase’s business. Individual customers can access it through the retail app, while institutional clients can use Coinbase Exchange and Coinbase Prime.

Jack McDonald, Ripple’s senior vice president of stablecoins, said institutions want compliant stablecoins on platforms they already trust. He described the Coinbase partnership as a way to bring RLUSD trading, settlement and custody together. Coinbase Institutional co-CEO Brett Tejpaul also welcomed the addition. He said institutional clients need more payment options alongside their existing trading and custody services.

Coinbase Adds RLUSD Support Across Three Blockchains

Coinbase supports RLUSD deposits and withdrawals on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), Base and Ethereum. Users can therefore transfer the stablecoin through different networks rather than relying on a single blockchain. Base is a blockchain network developed by Coinbase. Ripple said it would provide liquidity on Base to help RLUSD grow there. Liquidity refers to how easily an asset can be bought or sold without causing large price changes.

RLUSD is designed to maintain a value of one US dollar. Its reserves include dollar deposits, short-term US Treasury securities and other cash equivalents. These assets back the stablecoin and support its redemption for dollars.

Ripple launched RLUSD in December 2024. According to its latest announcement, the stablecoin has passed $2.4 billion in market capitalization. Its uses now include crypto trading, payments and institutional finance. The companies also plan to discuss institutional stablecoin adoption at Ripple Swell in New York on October 28.

Ripple Expands RLUSD Through Robinhood and Trust Bank Approval

The Coinbase agreement follows two other Ripple announcements this week. On October 27, Ripple announced a partnership with Robinhood to expand RLUSD use across retail and institutional services. The stablecoin is already available on Bitstamp by Robinhood, with access through the Robinhood app expected later this year. Robinhood also plans to use RLUSD on the XRP Ledger for institutional settlement.

A day earlier, Ripple received final approval from the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to establish Ripple National Trust Bank. The bank will manage reserves backing RLUSD and provide digital asset custody services once it opens. RLUSD will continue to be issued by Ripple’s New York-regulated Standard Custody & Trust Company.
