FBI Supervisor Accused of Stealing $1 Million in Cryptocurrency From Investigated Wallets

Highlights:

  • Patrick Steven Yaroch allegedly moved about $1 million in cryptocurrency from wallets linked to FBI investigations.
  • Prosecutors say the FBI cryptocurrency case involved recovery seed phrases, personal wallets, and about 10 to 12 transfers.
  • Investigators also found ChatGPT searches, travel plans to Portugal, and cryptocurrency linked to Kraken and Suilend accounts.

Federal prosecutors have charged former FBI supervisory special agent Patrick Steven Yaroch after accusing him of stealing about $1 million in cryptocurrency. Court documents say Yaroch met a Department of Justice employee on July 29 and admitted taking cryptocurrency before authorities arrested him on July 31.

Yaroch reportedly admitted making poor decisions after using cryptocurrency wallets connected to FBI investigations for unauthorized transfers. The filing says Yaroch became emotional because he told investigators that shame over the alleged transfers had weighed heavily on him.

Yaroch worked at FBI headquarters in the Counterintelligence and Espionage Division. He also held a Top Secret security clearance during his service. Before joining FBI headquarters, Yaroch worked in the Boston Field Office, where he investigated the same unnamed adversarial nation. Prosecutors say Yaroch discovered the cryptocurrency wallets while investigating that adversarial nation through FBI counterintelligence operations.

According to the criminal complaint, Yaroch allegedly transferred cryptocurrency from wallets linked to the foreign investigation into wallets and exchange accounts under his control. Prosecutors say Yaroch completed about 10 to 12 cryptocurrency transfers, moving roughly $1 million. Court filings also state the wallets belonged to subjects of FBI investigations rather than the bureau itself.

Yaroch reportedly told investigators that frustration over the FBI’s inability to act against the foreign-linked wallets led him to move the funds himself. However, prosecutors argue that he transferred the assets without legal authority and for personal benefit.

How the FBI Traced Cryptocurrency Through Wallet Evidence

Investigators linked Yaroch to the alleged transfers after examining his electronic devices, cryptocurrency accounts, and financial records. Prosecutors allege Yaroch memorized recovery seed phrases that FBI investigators had documented while tracking cryptocurrency wallets linked to an unnamed adversarial nation. Prosecutors say Yaroch later created a personal cryptocurrency wallet and used those recovery phrases to access the investigated wallets.

Court filings state that Yaroch used FBI systems to retrieve wallet keys before making the transfers. Agents recovered a Trezor hardware wallet from Yaroch’s residence during the search. Agents also found a handwritten recovery seed phrase that prosecutors believe related to the investigated wallets. Prosecutors later recovered about $925,426 in cryptocurrency that they linked to the alleged unauthorized transfers. Investigators also located about $165,582 in U.S. dollars held in Yaroch’s Kraken account.

However, prosecutors say Yaroch mixed the disputed cryptocurrency with his personal digital assets after completing the transfers. Therefore, prosecutors say the recovered balances do not establish the total value of the cryptocurrency Yaroch allegedly transferred. Court documents state that investigators may recover additional assets because the recovered cryptocurrency does not necessarily represent the total amount involved. Yaroch later agreed to move about $925,426 in recovered cryptocurrency into government-controlled wallets during the investigation.

AI Searches and Overseas Trips Draw Attention

Investigators reviewed Yaroch’s online searches and travel records when his electronic devices were seized. Yaroch had asked ChatGPT about making investments or spending money with a goal of making the most of $1 million, according to court filings.

Meanwhile, the allegations surfaced days after the FBI announced one of its largest cryptocurrency enforcement operations. The agency said the international crackdown seized about $8 billion in cryptocurrency. The operation led to hundreds of arrests after authorities targeted organized scam compounds operating across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Federal prosecutors continue pursuing Yaroch’s case while the criminal proceedings move through the court system.
