- Transitioning Linea to community-led control via the Linea Association, Consensys aims to empower users.
The Linea Association, a Swiss nonprofit organization, has been established to oversee the development and governance of Linea, an Ethereum Layer-2 scaling solution incubated by Consensys. Announced at Devcon in Bangkok on November 13, the association marks a major step towards decentralizing the Linea Network and empowering governance through the community. The LINEA token introduction will take place at the end of the first quarter of 2025, allowing users to participate actively in network governance.
Today we reach a major milestone: Introducing the Linea Association, an independent Swiss non-profit dedicated to advancing our ecosystem's development and governance. This marks a significant step toward true network decentralization.

Linea Association’s Mission
The Linea Association aims to support the growth of a Linea Mainnet, a zkEVM Layer 2 solution designed to scale Ethereum while preserving security and decentralization. The association aims to bolster Linea’s progress in decentralization by forming governance mechanisms and setting up decentralized sequencing and proving.
Furthermore, it focuses on empowering developers to build decentralized applications with improved user experiences and aims to distribute these applications widely, particularly through MetaMask.
Nicolas Liochon, founder of Linea and a board member of the Linea Association, said:
“Decentralization is at the core of Linea’s vision. Linea must be owned and governed openly by all as a public good like Layer 1 Ethereum is.”
The association intends to stimulate the formation of strong communities involving significant engagement. It also seeks to enable consumers and companies to keep and control valuable on-chain data including property and identity. Initial use cases include identification projects with attestation registries like Verax and on-chain payments with MetaMask Card.
LineA Token Launch and Governance
A key element of the operations of the Linea Association is the introduction of the LINEA token. Designed for launch at the end of Q1, 2025, the token’s holders will be able to take part in governance decisions. Beyond governance, the value of a LINEA token will grow with time. Before the token generating event, the association plans to share details of the design, economics, and utility of the token.
Consensys CEO Joseph Lubin spoke in favor of the effort. He remarked:
“We aim to build a more resilient and transparent web3 by decentralizing key components of our ecosystem such governance, infrastructure, and community empowerment.”
Since its mainnet launch in August 2023, the Linea Network has processed over 230 million transactions, becoming one of the fastest-growing zkEVMs on Ethereum. The ecosystem has expanded to over 420 partners, reflecting significant growth from 150 partners at launch.
The Linea Association plans to decentralize core protocol development by collaborating with long-term Ethereum contributors, such as Status, developers of the Nimbus client. The association will house core intellectual property and manage a treasury to support its mission.
Liochon added:
“We are committed to fostering a network that remains accessible worldwide to people from all economic and social backgrounds. Establishing the Linea Association ensures that the protocol’s future lies in the hands of its community.”
