Blue Origin, the aerospace company founded by Jeff Bezos, has announced that it will accept cryptocurrencies and stablecoins as a method of payment in its New Shepard suborbital flights. Using Shift4 Payments, the company has chosen to accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, USDT, and USDC from travelers worldwide. According to the statement, customers can connect popular wallets such as Coinbase and MetaMask to make bookings instantly and securely.

The New Shepard rocket has already carried more than 75 passengers above the Kármán Line. The boundary is internationally recognized as the mark of space at 100 kilometers. In flight, all passengers have panoramic views of the Earth through some of the largest windows in terms of space travel. By implementing the idea of crypto payments, Blue Origin opens up the service to more customers interested in a more convenient, faster alternative to booking a seat.

Transactions can be made using this new system at any time of the day with instant settlement in U.S. dollars. This removes the delays and exchange costs that are present when doing an international transfer using the traditional way. Shift4, the company that processes billions of transactions annually, uses its proven payment infrastructure in Blue Origin bookings. However, customers can now book a spaceflight within minutes with this integration, irrespective of location.

According to Wilson, both merchants and customers will benefit from lower fees and faster settlement, particularly in premium purchases such as space travel.

A Growing Trend in Luxury and Travel Payments

The new payment option is already open to all future commercial New Shepard flights. Other companies, such as private aviation and international airlines, have also initiated such options. Recently, Emirates Airlines entered an agreement with Crypto.com to adopt cryptocurrency payments by 2025. Jetcraft has also collaborated with CoinPayments in the private aviation sector to allow clients to purchase aircraft or services using digital assets.

Justin Sun, the founder of Tron, flew to space aboard New Shepard earlier this month after purchasing a seat. The flight cost $28 million. He didn’t pay with cryptocurrency, but the new system now makes it possible to handle similar large-value payments in the future.
