Bitmain Expands to the U.S.: What It Means for Miners

Bitmain is setting up production in the U.S., a move aimed at dodging trade tensions and supply delays. With Antminer S21 Pro shipments starting this month, this could stabilize the gear flow miners rely on.

This move by the company comes after the Customs and Border Protection delayed its shipments. Bitmain’s mining equipment shipments have been held up for long at the ports. The delivery of the company’s Antminer devices, key to Bitcoin mining operations, has been hit by these disruptions.

Bitmain is known for designing application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips. The company dominates 90% of the Bitcoin mining hardware market. Bitmain. The first product to come out of the new facility will be the company’s Antminer S21 Pro.

Obstacles for Bitcoin Miners

U.S. miners have faced delays of up to two months due to customs holds on Bitmain’s equipment. These delays have caused financial and operational challenges for miners waiting for new hardware. Many have incurred high storage fees while awaiting the release of detained shipments.

The delays are related to national security concerns regarding the Bitmain supply line. Authorities in the U.S. have stepped up scrutiny of Chinese imports, such as cryptocurrency mining hardware. Moreover, the two countries have been locked in trade tensions.

Trade restrictions are quickly escalating with the U.S. imposing an embargo on high bandwidth memory chips. China has banned exports of rare minerals to the U.S. in response. These measures have increased supply chain risk for companies that depend on cross border trade.  Setting up a production line in the U.S. could mitigate these issues.

Boosting Mining Operations

Bitmain has stated that it will begin its first round of Antminer S21 Pro deliveries this December. The Antminer S21 Pro will enhance mining capabilities and increase efficiency.

Production of these units at the U.S. facility represents a strategic shift for Bitmain. Moreover, the move will speed up delivery and avoid customs disruption. Local production will improve operational stability for area miners.

The move by Bitmain comes as the U.S. solidifies itself as one of the world’s biggest Bitcoin mining hubs. In particular, North America hosts over 44.3% of the global Bitcoin network hash rate. The fact that major mining companies are already active in the U.S. shows that reliable hardware delivery is now a critical component in the region.

Bitmain Denies Allegations of Huawei Supply Chain Links

Bitmain has also denied recent allegations linking it to Chinese technology firm Huawei, which is under U.S. export restrictions. Huawei products were said to contain chips from a supplier linked to Bitmain.

US Bitcoin miners are experiencing delays as Customs and Border Protection holds Bitmain's S21 and T21 ASICs at ports, possibly due to national security concerns linked to Sophgo and Huawei. This action impacts mining operations, with some firms facing hefty holding fees. While…

The company rejected these claims, stating them as false and baseless. In addition, Bitmain stated that it was not involved in any supply chain investigations. It also threatened legal action against media outlets spreading misinformation.

US concerns about national security among Chinese companies prompted the scrutiny. The export restrictions on Huawei began in 2020 and greatly heightened scrutiny of its supply chain.
