Highlights:
- Bitcoin is little changed intraday, even as volumes surge over 90% intraday.
- Price action reflects hawkish expectations from the Federal Reserve.
- A Bitcoin breakdown through the $77,169 support could see BTC drop to $62,612.
Bitcoin (BTC) is little changed intraday, though the overall sentiment is bearish in the day. At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading at $78,215.43, up a negligible 0.03% for the day. However, trading volume has surged, up 92.81% to $25.02 billion. The surge in volumes with little change in price, and an overall bearish market, point to holders likely exiting their positions. Multiple macro factors support a possible holder exit in the short term.
Hawkish Fed Sentiment Puts Bitcoin Price Under Pressure
One of them is the Federal Reserve’s Chairman’s hawkish remarks late last week. This has given the markets the impression that rates are set to go up in September. The possibility of a rate hike has been heightened by the fact that recent interventions by the Federal Reserve have not worked in stemming interest rates.
🚨 BREAKING:
🇺🇸 Fed Chair Kevin Warsh sounded hawkish at Jackson Hole
– Inflation is still too high
– The 2% target remains the priority
– The economy is still strong
– Rates may not be restrictive enough
– Rate cuts could be harder to come byBottom line: September rate-cut… pic.twitter.com/7UuqM0vqZy

Earlier in the month, the US Treasury announced that it was doubling long-term bond buybacks in a bid to stabilize long-term bond prices. While this worked for a few days, long-term bond yields started rising again. This has given markets the impression that US inflation is running out of control, further forcing expectations of a sharp hike in prices. Since Bitcoin tends to tank in high-rate environments, rising expectations of a rate hike could send it lower going into the near term.
Renewed Tensions in the Middle East Driving Traders Away From Bitcoin
The renewed tensions in the Middle East also weaken Bitcoin. Growing tensions over a potential escalation in Iran have pushed oil back above $90. Rising oil prices usually push markets into risk-off mode because of the risk of high inflation. As markets take a risk-off turn, high-beta assets like cryptocurrencies are usually the first to take a hit. As such, if the escalation becomes more pronounced and oil prices keep pushing higher, stock indices could start to fall. For Bitcoin, this could mean a potential erasure of the gains it has made recently.

Mixed Inflows Into Bitcoin ETFs Point to Institutional Caution
Big investor exit from Bitcoin at current prices is also validated by activity in the ETF markets. During Bitcoin’s recent price rally, ETF inflows rocketed exponentially. However, in the last few days, the inflows have become more erratic. This is taking away the buying pressure that has been pushing Bitcoin higher. For context, during the recent price rally, Bitcoin at some point saw ETF inflows of $2 billion in 5 sessions. This is taking away much-needed momentum at a time when the macro environment is taking a risk-off pivot.
The technicals also explain the intraday weakness. After the recent rally from under $65k to $80k, profit-taking was bound to happen. The price has seen the start to consolidate between $80k and $78k. As the price consolidates around this region, short sellers are bound to come in, especially if the macro environment continues to send negative signals. The result is that the intraday weakness could become more pronounced in the short term.
Technical Analysis – Bitcoin Price Consolidates After Multi-Day Rally
After a parabolic price rally, Bitcoin is consolidating between the $80,229 resistance and $77,169 support. If bulls take control and push Bitcoin through the $80,229 resistance, a rally to $96,012 could follow in the short term.

However, if bears take control and push Bitcoin through the $77,169 support, a correction to $62,162 in the short term is possible. Of these scenarios, a correction to $62,162 is more likely. This is due to the rising risk of a rate hike in the US and the renewed tensions in the Middle East. Weakening inflows into ETFs also point to a slowdown in institutional inflows into Bitcoin.
