BancaStato Launches Regulated Crypto Trading with Sygnum and Avaloq Integration

Highlights:

  • BancaStato now offers customers crypto trading through its existing web and mobile banking applications.
  • Customers can buy, hold, and sell cryptocurrencies from one banking platform.
  • Sygnum is expanding its banking network by helping more financial institutions offer regulated digital asset services.

Swiss cantonal bank BancaStato has introduced regulated cryptocurrency trading through a partnership with Sygnum and banking technology provider Avaloq. BancaStato customers in Switzerland can now buy, hold, and sell Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Solana through the bank’s existing web and mobile banking applications. The bank integrated the crypto service into its existing banking applications instead of directing customers to another platform.

Customers can place market orders through the bank’s digital platforms using either the cryptocurrency amount or the U.S. dollar value. BancaStato added the service to its existing investment offering without changing its digital banking experience. As a result, customers can access both traditional and digital assets from the same banking platform.

BancaStato has served customers across Switzerland’s Italian-speaking Ticino region since 1915. Curzio De Gottardi, Head of BancaStato’s Products and Services Division, said the new service strengthens the bank’s investment offering. He added, “Our seamless integration of traditional assets, investment solutions, and now digital assets further enhances our group’s offering. We look forward to leveraging Sygnum’s crypto-native banking expertise and secure infrastructure.”

However, the bank has not announced plans to add more cryptocurrencies or digital asset products beyond Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Solana. The direct connection to Sygnum’s platform gives the bank the technical capability to introduce additional digital asset services in the future.

How BancaStato Brings Crypto Trading to Customers

BancaStato became the first bank using Avaloq’s software-as-a-service environment to provide Sygnum-powered cryptocurrency trading through an API. The bank connected Sygnum’s business-to-business infrastructure directly to its Avaloq core banking platform.

The integration uses Sygnum’s business-to-business API inside Avaloq’s software-as-a-service environment. The API connects directly to BancaStato’s existing banking systems and removes the need for a separate order management system. Sygnum said the setup reduces technical complexity and allows BancaStato to introduce new trading features through its current infrastructure.

Sygnum protects customer cryptocurrencies through hardware security, software controls, governance procedures, and independent external audits. The company also keeps customer digital assets separate from its corporate balance sheet under the applicable legal framework, giving customers regulated institutional custody.

Sygnum Grows Its Banking Network Across Europe

BancaStato now joins more than 25 banks and financial institutions that use Sygnum’s business-to-business platform to provide regulated digital asset services. The network includes PostFinance, Zuger Kantonalbank, Bordier & Cie, and Societe Generale-FORGE. Sygnum said its partner banks now provide more than one-third of Switzerland’s population with access to regulated digital asset services.

PostFinance introduced Sygnum-powered cryptocurrency trading through its existing banking platform two years ago. Sygnum later said 61% of customers who purchased cryptocurrency through PostFinance had never invested through the bank before. PostFinance also expanded the partnership by adding Ethereum staking through the same digital banking platform.

Sygnum also worked with UBS and PostFinance on blockchain settlement. The three institutions completed a legally binding interbank payment using tokenized bank deposits on a public blockchain in September last year.

Meanwhile, Liechtenstein’s Financial Market Authority authorized Sygnum Europe to operate under a Crypto-Asset Service Provider license through the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation on June 30. The license allows Sygnum Europe to provide digital asset infrastructure to banks and institutional clients across the European Union and the European Economic Area.

Zürcher Kantonalbank and St. Galler Kantonalbank already offer cryptocurrency trading and custody services to their banking customers. UBS has also explored Bitcoin trading for selected wealth management clients in Switzerland.
