Highlights:
- Pluralistic IDs protect privacy by allowing multiple identities rather than a single, traceable one.
- Zero-knowledge proofs can enhance privacy but may risk reducing pseudonymity with one-per-person models.
- Pluralistic IDs offer more flexibility and inclusivity, preventing monopolies on digital identity systems.
Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has proposed a new mode of managing digital identities: pluralistic IDs. His concept seeks to provide answers to the problem of privacy in the digital realm and allows all users to participate fairly. With the increased prevalence of digital life, there has been an increased demand for secure and private identification systems.
The Risks of One-ID Systems
The current trends in digital identity systems are leaning towards the one-ID-to-a-person model. Such systems use technologies such as zero-knowledge bundling (ZK) that enable people to authenticate themselves without providing personal data. Although this sounds promising, Buterin cautions that having a single digital identity can be harmful, according to the blog post.
this is quite accurate but are social graphs actually feasible in the real world for identity? One thing not mentioned is how easy it is to game them. The UX of attesting is also onerous and most regular users will not participate in social graph / web of trust ID for that…

Buterin states that this model would compromise pseudonymity. Pseudonymity also enables individuals to have isolated accounts on the web without having their identity revealed, which is essential to privacy. A global ID system would compel people to combine all their internet activities in one identifiable profile, making them easily monitored and coerced.
In contrast, a pluralistic ID system would facilitate the ease of users having one or more but separate digital identities. This would maintain anonymity and make sure that personal data is under the control of the user. Buterin underlines that pluralistic IDs are the key to preserving privacy in the increasingly connected world.
How Pluralistic IDs Work
Pluralistic IDs are created to avoid one entity monopolizing the digital identity systems. In his proposal, Buterin indicates two categories of pluralistic models: explicit and implicit. Explicit models may comprise social-graph-based verifications whereby trust is constructed by means of community connections. Implicit models, on the other hand, depend on multiple identity providers like passports, social logins or government IDs.
This variety of identity sources could discourage any entity from achieving excessive power over the personal data of users. In addition, pluralistic systems are more resilient because they are not constantly reliant on a single center of authority. Pluralistic IDs are particularly favorable to people in marginalized circumstances due to their flexibility. This involves the stateless people or those who cannot use traditional systems of identification.
The Promise of Pluralistic Digital Identity
The opportunities of pluralistic IDS are more than privacy. They present an inclusive digital environment in which all people, irrespective of their backgrounds and resources, can engage in a fair manner. In contrast to centralized approaches to dealing with identity, where rich individuals and those possessing unique technologies benefit the most, pluralistic IDs make no one a digital interaction outcast.
Moreover, pluralistic systems would also avoid monopolistic tendencies in the digital identity sector. Having a single identity provider or platform within the market would force users onto a strict, one-size-fits-all paradigm. However, using pluralistic IDs, the risk of this control is reduced, since the ecosystem is decentralized and diverse.
However, Buterin envisions the future of identity systems integrating both one-per-person and social-graph style systems. Such a hybrid solution would allow building a worldwide distributed network of identities that can provide security with privacy. In addition, the resulting system would provide more freedom and control to users, enabling them to traverse the digital world on their own terms.
