U.S. Government Seeks Return of $13.25M in Political Donations from Ex-FTX Execs

Highlights:

  • U.S. government seeks to recover $13.25 million in political donations from ex-FTX executives.
  • Federal Judge Kaplan approved negotiations with PACs until January 15, 2025.
  • Former chief engineer at FTX Nishad Singh received leniency for cooperating with authorities in the investigation.

The U.S. government is seeking to recover up to $13.25 million in political donations made by former FTX executives Nishad Singh and Sam Bankman-Fried, according to a new filing in federal court. These contributions were mainly directed to Democrat-aligned political action committees (PACs), such as the Emily’s List/Women Vote, Senate Majority PAC, and Future Forward PAC.

Federal Judge Lewis Kaplan, overseeing the criminal case against Bankman-Fried and his subordinates, approved the government’s request to prolong negotiations with PACs until January 15, 2025. According to testimony, Singh stated he made donations at Bankman-Fried’s request, sometimes signing blank checks for this purpose.

Overview of Political Donations from Former FTX Executives

Records show that the Future Forward PAC received $1 million in Singh’s name and $5 million in Bankman-Fried’s name. The GMI PAC received $2 million. The Senate Majority PAC, which has been controlled by Democrats since January 2021, received $2 million from Singh and $1 million from Bankman-Fried. Women Vote received $2.25 million from Singh. In total, up to $13.25 million was donated to these groups, and possibly more if donations were attributed to other donors.

These negotiations are part of the U.S. government’s broader efforts to address donations linked to ex-FTX executives. This comes amid allegations of fraudulent activity by Bankman-Fried and his associates. Several political organizations have reportedly returned funds that were previously donated by the executives. Others have chosen to redirect the money to charitable causes. The case has highlighted the legal issues surrounding political contributions from individuals facing allegations of financial misconduct.

Singh Receives Lenient Sentence Amid Cooperation with Authorities

Nishad Singh, the former head of engineering at FTX, has been spared prison time for his role in the exchange’s collapse. Last month, Judge Lewis Kaplan commended Singh for his “remarkable” cooperation with the government. Initially facing up to 75 years in prison, Singh convinced the judge that his role in the exchange’s fraud was far less significant than Bankman-Fried’s 25-year sentence and Caroline Ellison’s two-year sentence.

Instead, Singh received a sentence of time served and three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to forfeit $11 billion. Last year, Singh pleaded guilty to six charges, including conspiracy to commit securities fraud, money laundering, and violating campaign finance laws. Singh’s attorney, Andrew Goldstein, pointed out that Singh was less involved in the main conspiracy. He only became aware of Alameda Research’s unauthorized use of FTX customer funds in September 2022, just before FTX collapsed.

Singh admitted in court that he strayed from his values. He did not expect forgiveness but said that cooperating with the government gave him purpose. Prosecutors recognized Singh’s cooperation, stating he provided vital information. This included insights into an undiscovered campaign finance scheme through 24 meetings with investigators.

More than 100 individuals submitted letters in support of Singh. This included one from SBF’s brother, Gabe Bankman-Fried. He described Singh as “one of the kindest people [he has] ever known.”
