Rising Debt Makes Bitcoin a Stronger Long-Term Hedge, HIVE Chairman Says

Highlights:

  • Frank Holmes says rising government and household debt strengthens Bitcoin’s appeal as a long-term hedge.
  • He expects governments to print more money during crises, increasing inflation and currency weakness concerns.
  • Holmes suggests investing $100 monthly through VanEck’s HODL ETF, while warning Bitcoin remains highly volatile.

Frank Holmes, executive chairman of HIVE Digital Technologies, believes rising government and household debt is strengthening Bitcoin’s role as a long-term financial hedge. According to a July 29 report by TheStreet, Holmes argued that governments will likely respond to future economic crises by creating more money, potentially weakening the purchasing power of traditional currencies over time. “We know what will happen if it comes to an economic crisis — they’ll just print more money,” Holmes said.

Holmes Links Rising Debt with Bitcoin Demand

Frank Holmes acknowledged that growing debt creates serious economic risks. However, he does not expect governments to solve the problem through major spending cuts or rapid debt repayment. Instead, he believes policymakers will continue using financial support programs and monetary expansion when economies face pressure.

He linked this policy approach with modern monetary theory, commonly known as MMT. Holmes argued that governments increasingly respond to financial problems by expanding spending and creating more currency. In his view, such policies make scarce assets, including Bitcoin and gold, more attractive to investors seeking protection from inflation and currency weakness.

The broader U.S. debt picture supports concerns about growing financial pressure. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, total household debt reached $18.8 trillion during the first quarter of the year. Mortgage balances stood at $13.19 trillion, while auto loan balances increased to $1.69 trillion. Credit card balances were also around $1.25 trillion.

Frank Holmes Suggests a $100 Monthly Bitcoin Hedge

Holmes presented Bitcoin as one possible way for ordinary investors to protect a small part of their savings. He suggested investing around $100 each month through HODL, the VanEck Bitcoin ETF. He compared the amount with spending less than $3 per day at a coffee shop.

A spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund allows investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin through a traditional brokerage account. Investors do not need to purchase the cryptocurrency directly or manage a private digital wallet. However, VanEck warns that an investment in its HODL Bitcoin ETF carries significant risk and may not be suitable for every investor. The fund’s value can rise or fall alongside Bitcoin’s market price.

Holmes also compared Bitcoin with gold, which investors often consider during periods of inflation and financial uncertainty. His argument focuses mainly on scarcity. Governments can issue additional currency, but no central authority can increase Bitcoin’s supply outside the network’s programmed issuance system.

Bitcoin’s Volatility Remains a Major Risk

Holmes’ comments add to the wider debate over whether Bitcoin can protect wealth during periods of growing debt and monetary expansion. Supporters view its decentralized structure and limited supply as major advantages. However, Bitcoin can experience sharp price swings, creating the possibility of significant short-term losses.

Holmes’ $100-per-month example represents a gradual investment approach rather than a promise of guaranteed returns. Bitcoin may offer protection against currency expansion, but investors still need to consider its volatility and their personal risk tolerance before adding it to a portfolio.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading at approximately $64,413, down 2.423% over the past 24 hours. However, BTC remained about 48.9% below its all-time high of $126,198, reached in October.
