Highlights:
- Ethereum price drops even as volumes surge by double-digits.
- Renewed military strikes in Iran and rising US bond yields pushing Ethereum lower.
- Ethereum faces a possible drop to $1800 now that bulls have failed at resistance.
Ethereum (ETH), like the rest of the cryptocurrency market, is in the red today. When writing, Ethereum was trading at $2390.15, down 2.44% in the day. While the volumes are dropping, Ethereum trading volumes are rising in the day, up 14% to $14.63 billion at press time.
Ethereum’s rising volumes at a time when the price is going up are an indicator that holders are exiting their positions. This means Ethereum could test even lower prices in the short term. Looking ahead, there is a confluence of factors that support more correction for Ethereum in the short to medium term.
Renewed Military Action In Iran Pushing Ethereum Price Lower
The biggest one is the renewed military action in Iran. This move has triggered a risk-off pivot across the financial markets. Oil prices are surging, and UK Brent is now pushing the $94 mark. At the same time, the dollar is surging, an indicator that investors are rushing to safety. The major concern is that the restart of the war could disrupt already weakened oil supply chains much further.
The result is that the world economy could weaken, and that is not good for risk-on assets. For cryptocurrencies in particular, due to their high beta to US stock indices, investors expect them to experience a much steeper selloff, hence the weakening of Ethereum.
Rising US Bond Yields Make Ethereum Unattractive to Investors
The geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East are also coming at a time when treasury yields in the US are on the rise. Late last month, the US Treasury made attempts to stabilize long-term bond yields by doubling buybacks. However, this does not appear to be working, and yields remain elevated.
Currently, 10-year treasury yields stand at 4.8%, one of the highest levels in multiple years. The impact is that the average investor is staying away from risky assets like Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies.
Slowing Ethereum ETF Inflows Driving Bearish Sentiment
Ethereum is also taking a hit from the fact that ETF inflows are slowing down. Ethereum ETFs are the primary tool that institutional investors use to invest in Ethereum. With the markets taking a risk-off turn, Ethereum ETFs have seen a slowdown in investments. This has taken away most of the momentum that usually draws in retail capital. With the slowdown in ETF inflows, Ethereum could be headed much lower in the short to medium term.

Profit Taking After Recent Rally Adds to Ethereum Selloff
All these negative factors are coming into play after Ethereum experienced a significant price rally. After the US Treasury announced a doubling of long-term bond buybacks, markets took a strong risk-on pivot.
Major cryptocurrencies like Ethereum rallied by double-digits in a matter of days. As such, a sizeable amount of investors are in profit at current prices. This makes such investors more comfortable with taking profit as the macro environment turns risky. The profit-taking could play a role in accelerating a downside slide in the short term.
Regarding the ETH short: Arkham has detected a whale who consolidated $250M worth of $ETH from numerous wallets and has now started selling.
He’ve already sent $7M to CEXs ☝️
I’m not an ETH fan, as you know. But if Bitcoin corrects even to $70K, ETH could drop hard. https://t.co/gQoUwwGtxa pic.twitter.com/7gmtBs0J3X

Technical Analysis – Ethereum Price Falls Back as Bears Regain Control
Ethereum rallied through the $2418.3 resistance on August 21, but Ethereum bulls failed to sustain momentum and started consolidating. Today, Ethereum bears have taken back control and pushed Ethereum back under the $2418.3 resistance.

This is a pointer that sentiment has turned negative, and short sellers are back. If bulls sustain momentum, Ethereum could drop back to the $1830.7 support in the short term. On the other hand, if bulls regain control and push Ethereum back through the $2418.3 resistance, a rally to $3022.4 could follow. Of these scenarios, a correction to $1830.7 is more likely. This is due to renewed tensions in the Middle East that have pushed markets into risk-off mode.
