VanEck to Close Ethereum Futures ETF as Its Crypto Strategy Shifts

Highlights:

  • VanEck closes Ethereum Strategy ETF, shifting focus to direct Ethereum ETF amid changes in investor interest.
  • Final trading for VanEck’s EFUT set for September 16, 2024, with liquidation following on September 23.
  • SEC approval of VanEck’s Ethereum ETF and others marks a significant expansion in their cryptocurrency offerings.

VanEck has announced the closure and liquidation of its Ethereum Strategy ETF (EFUT), with the final trading day set for September 16, 2024. The decision was made after a comprehensive evaluation of the fund’s performance, liquidity, and investor interest. Any remaining shares will be liquidated after its delisting on September 23, 2024.

Ethereum Strategy ETF Closed Due to Performance

According to VanEck’s statement, the termination of the Ethereum Strategy ETF (EFUT) is based on a review of several factors. These include the fund’s overall performance, liquidity, and operational considerations. Despite being launched on October 2, 2023, EFUT had not met the company’s expectations in terms of growth.

As of September 5, 2024, the fund held $21.24 million in total net assets and had a net asset value (NAV) of $20.23 per share. VanEck designed the fund to invest in ether futures contracts instead of Ethereum. It listed the fund on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) but failed to attract the sustained investor interest VanEck had anticipated.

VanEck has emphasized that their decision was driven by the need to maintain a high-quality offering across their ETFs. This is consistent with their previous action in January when they announced the liquidation of their Bitcoin Strategy ETF due to similar concerns regarding performance and investor demand.

The firm stated:

“VanEck continuously monitors and evaluates its ETF offerings across some factors, including performance, liquidity, assets under management, and investor interest, among others.”

Key Dates and Details for EFUT Liquidation

EFUT shareholders will have until the close of trading on September 16, 2024, to sell their shares. After this date, EFUT shares will be delisted from CBOE. For those holding shares beyond September 16, VanEck will liquidate their positions on September 23, 2024. Shareholders will receive a cash amount equal to the value of their shares at the time of liquidation.

VanEck also mentioned that the fund may issue a final distribution of any remaining income and capital gains before closure. VanEck encourages investors to assess the potential tax implications of holding EFUT shares, as they must report any capital gains or losses. This step could impact shareholders’ tax obligations for the year.

Impact on VanEck’s Broader Ethereum Strategy

While VanEck is closing its Ethereum Strategy ETF, the company continues to expand its cryptocurrency-related offerings. Earlier this year, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved VanEck’s Ethereum ETF (ETHV) and seven other spot ether funds. This approval reflects the firm’s ongoing interest in providing exposure to Ethereum through alternative investment vehicles.

VanEck remains committed to monitoring its ETF products across multiple factors, including performance and investor demand. The company has stated that it will continue to adapt its offerings to align with market conditions and investor needs.

VanEck’s decision to close its Ethereum Strategy ETF reflects its proactive approach to portfolio management, mirroring earlier actions like the closure of its Bitcoin Strategy ETF. This move is in response to a shift in investor interest towards spot ETFs. VanEck is closing its Ethereum Strategy ETF and focusing on a direct Ethereum ETF, which it expects to see greater growth.
