Senate Democrats Request Clarity on Trump’s Pardon of Binance CEO

Highlights:

  • Senate Democrats demand DOJ clarify Trump’s pardon and its impact on crime.
  • Lawmakers warn the pardon could weaken enforcement and encourage crypto industry misconduct.
  • Senators question whether Trump’s financial ties to Zhao influenced his controversial pardon decision.

Seven Democratic senators are seeking more information from Attorney General Pam Bondi and the US Department of Justice regarding President Donald Trump’s pardon of Binance co-founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao. They said the pardon could signal to cryptocurrency leaders and other white-collar criminals that illegal actions might go unpunished.

Elizabeth Warren, Chris Van Hollen, Mazie Hirono, Richard Blumenthal, Bernard Sanders, Jack Reed, and Jeffrey Merkley wrote in a Tuesday letter that the decision could weaken federal authorities’ ability to prevent and tackle criminal activity.

Alleged Trump Links in Pardon of Binance CEO

The lawmakers outlined alleged connections between Zhao, Trump, and Binance. Trump’s family launched a decentralized finance platform, World Liberty Financial, late last year, which has reportedly been tied to Binance’s activities. Reports said that Zhao arranged meetings for WLF leaders, which CZ denied in May.

Other sources indicate Binance may have contributed to the development of USD1, a stablecoin issued by WLF. “After Mr. Zhao’s company provided President Trump and his family with a revenue stream worth millions of dollars, President Trump pardoned him for criminal activity that he admitted to conducting,” they said.

Concerns Over Lobbying and Law Enforcement Impact

The pardon also drew attention because of lobbying efforts. Reports said Zhao’s pardon followed payments of $450,000 to Trump-linked lobbyists and $290,000 to Teresa Goody Guillén, a former SEC chair candidate and CZ’s lawyer. The senators warned that the pardon could have bigger effects. They said it might weaken federal law enforcement and give the impression that cryptocurrency executives and other white-collar criminals can avoid punishment.

The senators asked the DOJ and Attorney General Bondi to explain how the pardon could affect crypto companies and people breaking the law. They also wanted to know if Trump’s money connections to Zhao influenced the pardon. Trump gave the pardon last week. He said some told him Zhao “did not even commit a crime.” Zhao had pleaded guilty last year for breaking the US Bank Secrecy Act by not having a proper Anti-Money Laundering program at Binance.

The pardon came after lobbying payments and Trump’s financial connections. Lawmakers criticized it, saying it hurts law enforcement and sends a wrong message to crypto leaders. The senators said the pardon could weaken federal oversight and make it harder to punish future financial crimes in crypto and other businesses.

Earlier this week, Representative Maxine Waters criticized Trump’s pardon of the Binance CEO. She said he was giving favors to crypto criminals who had benefited him financially. “Trump’s pardon of Binance founder Changpeng Zhao—who pleaded guilty to enabling money laundering and facilitating suspicious transactions with child abusers, drug dealers, and terrorists—is an appalling but unsurprising reflection of his presidency,” Waters said.
