Ripple Labs’ UBRI Expansion and Blockchain Investments
Ripple’s University Blockchain Research Initiative has been active for over seven years, originally established to advance academic research. Over time, it has grown to empower the next generation of innovators, researchers, and entrepreneurs. UBRI helps universities explore blockchain through practical research and innovation. To support this goal, $1.1 million has been committed to a six-year collaboration with Korea University, further strengthening its existing partnership with Yonsei University, which began last fall.
Japan’s blockchain research is receiving a boost, with Kyoto University and the University of Tokyo securing a total of $1.5 million to support their studies. Meanwhile, Singapore has received an even larger investment, with over $3 million allocated to research initiatives at Nanyang Technological University and the National University of Singapore.
UBRI is making its debut in Taiwan’s academic sector by collaborating with the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST). Echo Huang, a professor at the NKUST, said “NKUST is excited about this new chapter, partnering with Ripple’s University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI) to explore the potential of Real-World Asset (RWA) tokenization on the XRP Ledger.”
The Australian National University (ANU) has received funding to study the legal framework surrounding blockchain and drive progress in XRPL development. Meanwhile, Victoria University has partnered with UBRI to develop blockchain-focused coursework and conduct applied research in the field.
Since its inception, UBRI has contributed more than $11 million to blockchain research in Asia, collaborating with 13 academic institutions across the region. Ripple is bringing together blockchain experts from around the world for its seventh annual UBRI Connect, which will take place alongside the XRP Ledger Apex event in Singapore this year.
Ripple’s Commitment to Education and Market Impact
Ripple’s latest funding follows its recent $25 million commitment to improving educational resources for U.S. teachers. Earlier this year, the company launched the National Cryptocurrency Association, a nonprofit focused on crypto education in the U.S. It has allocated $50 million to support this initiative. Through this initiative, startups developing on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) can apply for grants of up to $200K per project.
