- Vitalik Buterin says he no longer aligns with the Future of Life Institute after the group shifted its focus toward AI policy.
- Buterin warns that large political campaigns around AI regulation can create fragile systems.
- Shiba Inu tokens donated in 2021 eventually produced about $500 million for research and charitable programs.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said he no longer aligns closely with the Future of Life Institute. The institute received Shiba Inu tokens from him in 2021. However, Buterin said the group later shifted away from the direction he originally supported.
There are often posts mentioning that I donated a very large amount of funds to @FLI_org years ago and connecting me to various policy actions that they take. I thought I would make clear the record both on the nature of my connection to them, and on similarities and differences…

The situation began during the memecoin surge of 2021. Developers sent large amounts of Shiba Inu and other dog-themed tokens to Buterin’s public wallet. Many projects hoped to gain attention by linking their tokens to his name. As a result, his wallet accumulated massive amounts of meme tokens.
The value of those tokens rose quickly during the rally. At one point, the book value of the holdings exceeded $1 billion. Buterin believed the surge could represent a market bubble. Therefore, he accessed the tokens from cold storage and redistributed them. He sold part of the holdings for Ether and donated the rest to several causes. About half of the remaining SHIB went to India’s COVID-19 relief effort through CryptoRelief. Meanwhile, he sent another portion of the tokens to the Future of Life Institute.
Buterin said the institute initially presented a clear roadmap when it received the donation. The plan focused on reducing global risks that could threaten humanity. It addressed dangers related to artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and nuclear weapons. The proposal also included research initiatives and public education programs. It encouraged cooperation around emerging technologies and global risk awareness. According to Buterin, those goals convinced him to support the organization.
Buterin Raises Concerns as the Organization Moves Toward Political Advocacy Around AI
Buterin later said he noticed a clear shift in the institute’s strategy. He believes the organization moved toward cultural and political advocacy around artificial intelligence regulation. According to him, this direction differs from the strategy originally presented when he donated SHIB.
He warned that large political campaigns backed by major funding pools can create unintended consequences. Such efforts can also trigger public backlash. Policies developed under political pressure may fail when applied in complex real-world systems. Buterin also said large coordinated actions can become authoritarian if leaders apply them without caution. Even well-intended initiatives can create harmful results.
The organization states that its mission focuses on reducing extreme risks from transformative technologies. It supports policies designed to guide artificial intelligence development toward public benefit. According to the institute, AI should improve lives rather than only increase corporate profits.
However, Buterin questioned several proposals connected to artificial intelligence safety. Some proposals suggest installing safeguards in biosynthesis devices and AI models. These safeguards would prevent systems from producing harmful instructions. Buterin argued that such restrictions may not work in practice. Skilled users can bypass safeguards through technical workarounds. Developers can jailbreak systems or fine-tune them to ignore restrictions. Meanwhile, Vitalik Buterin recently stated that AI could advance the development of the Ethereum ecosystem.
This is quite an impressive experiment. Vibe-coding the entire 2030 roadmap within weeks.
Obviously such a thing built in two weeks without even having the EIPs has massive caveats: almost certainly lots of critical bugs, and probably in some cases "stub" versions of a thing… https://t.co/ZlTg0r2hvI

Future of Life Institute and the Unexpected Scale of the SHIB Donation
Buterin also addressed the economic impact of the Shiba Inu donation. He had initially anticipated that the tokens would yield small dividends upon sale. He felt at the time that the SHIB market was not liquid enough to make any big transactions. He estimated the sale to produce between 10 million and 25 million. Nevertheless, the result was even better than those expectations.
Both CryptoRelief and the Future of Life Institute managed to convert far larger amounts of the tokens. Buterin said the total liquidation reached roughly $500 million. As a result, the donation became one of the largest crypto-funded charitable contributions. The institute later launched a grant program supported partly by the funds.
