UK FCA Bans Coinbase TV Ad, Armstrong Fires Back

Highlights:

  • Coinbase’s ad criticized the UK’s financial system, sparking regulatory backlash and political concerns.
  • Armstrong defends the ad, saying crypto offers real solutions beyond outdated financial norms.
  • Despite ad bans, crypto content continues spreading, fueling debate over finance and free speech.

On July 31, Coinbase released a sarcastic ad titled “Everything is Fine.” It highlights the UK’s rising living costs, a failing financial system, and public frustration with the Labour government. It also points to wealthy people leaving the country and growing interest in Bitcoin, suggesting crypto as a better alternative.

The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has banned a Coinbase TV ad, saying it was too political and could mislead people. This isn’t the first time. Back in 2021, the Advertising Standards Authority also banned a Coinbase wallet ad for being unclear. Even though the “Everything Is Fine” ad didn’t support any political party, regulators said it gave a negative view of the government and promoted crypto in a way that might confuse people.

The ad starts with a ceiling that begins to leak and then falls down. This is meant to show that the UK is still stuck with an old and outdated financial system. A voice in the ad delivers a clear message: “If everything is fine, then don’t change anything at all. But when the financial system isn’t working for so many people in the UK, it needs to be updated.”

Coinbase Ad Ban Fuels UK Crypto Debate

Many people saw the ad as proof that big institutions are against digital finance. In response, Armstrong posted on X to support the ad and stand by its message. He told his 1.5 million X followers, “Our ad, which got banned by the TV networks, has sparked quite a reaction. If you can’t say it, then there must be a kernel of truth in it.”

Armstrong pointed out that the traditional financial system doesn’t work for many people and said crypto could be a better solution. He explained that calling for updates to the system and improvements to society isn’t meant as a political statement toward any UK political party, and that the message isn’t limited to the UK alone.

Armstrong criticized what he described as an outdated view held by some people in the UK who see crypto as gambling. He said these individuals have completely misunderstood crypto’s real purpose to modernize and improve the financial system. He also mentioned that they welcome criticism and any efforts to block the message, as those actions only help it reach more people.

Crypto Ads Still Circulate in UK Despite Regulatory Ban

As of January 2025, illegal crypto ads are still showing up in the UK, even though the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has banned them from targeting UK citizens. The Financial Times reports that out of 1,702 FCA warnings, just 54% led to ad removals.

The rest are still online. Also, the FCA hasn’t fined the companies that ignored the rules. Experts say that even with the bans, it takes a long time to build cases and take legal action. Former FCA chair Charles Randell emphasized the need for tougher enforcement measures. He warned that unless crypto exchanges see a serious risk of legal punishment for breaking the rules, things are unlikely to change.
